Day 3 - Our “Easy” Day!
I will be posting today in pieces, as I have the time to add to it.
I forgot to mention yesterday that we left the Mosel River at Konz and cycled 20 km up the Saar River to Saarburg. So, this morning we cycled back to Konz to once again join the Mosel River. It was quite cool this morning, so many of us got caught a bit off guard regarding our clothing. It was very beautiful to cycle along the river as the mist was hanging in the valleys.
Our first stop was at a cemetery and they had a beautiful garden and memorial building where they displayed a “window” to commemorate the person that has passed.
We were lucky enough to come across some Romanian workers that were picking grapes. They were working on a very steep hill, it didn’t look like a very fun job.
As our group was about to leave Konz, Rikko asked us if we wanted to do a small side trip to see the ruins of Constantine’s summer palace. We should have known better than to have believed Rikko’s assurance that it involved a “slight incline”! We had to cross the highway, which involved using a very steep and winding overpass, followed by an uphill street!! Once we finally found the site, we walked around the outside and Rikko translated the signs for us. There was a church built over the remains of the villa, and under the church was a crypt. Rikko went in search of someone to let us into the crypt and he came back with the Parish priest. This fellow was so happy to have an audience that he lead us through the entire site again, in spite of Rikko telling him that we had already seen it. He finally took us into the crypt but then also wanted to show us the church. Finally Rikko had to get assertive and tell h8m that we really needed to leave. By this time it was noon and we still had to cycle 11 km to Trier before we got to stop for lunch.
We finally arrived in Trier and immediately dug into our lunch bags. Marcel’s Group was there and already finished lunch.
After lunch Rikko took us on a walking tour in Trier (Marcel also took his group). After the tour we had free time to explore this beautiful old city and to shop. Rikko and I hopped on our bikes and rode to the train station in hopes of purchasing our train tickets from Cochem to Koblenz. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that so we are still without tickets!
It began to rain at 4:30 so everyone got pretty wet riding back to the boat.
I stayed in town to meet up with my good friends from Germany. We spent the evening together strolling around Trier and eventually going for dinner at a lovely French restaurant before they set odd on their two hour journey back to their home.
